Plan a return to driving with an instructor assessment, targeted practice and realistic progress goals for parking, traffic and everyday journeys.

Holding a driving licence does not mean every driving task feels comfortable after a long break. You may remember basic controls but feel uncertain at junctions, during parking or in busy traffic. Refresher training works best when it begins with an honest discussion of those situations.

Describe what has changed

Tell the instructor how long you have been away from regular driving, which transmission you used, and whether you now need to drive a different car. Explain the journeys you hope to make, such as commuting or family trips, without assuming the first lesson should follow the most demanding route.

Bring the licence details and other documents requested by the school. If a health, vision or mobility change may affect your driving, seek appropriate professional advice and discuss any relevant restrictions before arranging practice.

Use the first lesson as an assessment

A suitable starting session can review seating, mirrors, controls, starting, stopping and observation in manageable conditions. The instructor can then identify whether the next priority is vehicle control, recognising hazards or handling a specific manoeuvre.

This assessment helps avoid two extremes: repeating everything regardless of your ability, or moving too quickly because you already hold a licence. Ask for a short written plan and the reason for each priority.

Practise the situations that matter

Focused sessions might cover reversing, parking, lane positioning, junction decisions or keeping calm when traffic builds up. Use repetition and feedback rather than measuring success only by distance driven. When an exercise becomes difficult, return to a simpler version before progressing.

Keep a record of what you can perform consistently and what still requires prompts. It is useful to notice whether a skill remains dependable on another day and in a different suitable setting.

Agree a realistic route back to independence

Ask the instructor how progress will be reviewed and whether more supervised practice is needed. A fixed number of lessons cannot guarantee confidence or readiness for every road condition. Choose gradual, appropriate journeys only when you meet the applicable requirements and can manage the task safely.
