A first scooty lesson should give you time to become familiar with the machine. You do not need to prove confidence by moving straight into traffic. Tell the instructor about any previous cycling or riding experience, difficulty balancing, and the situations that worry you.

Check comfort before moving

With the vehicle supported and the engine off as directed, identify the throttle, brake controls, indicators, horn, mirrors and stand. Ask how the particular model's braking system works. Adjust your position so that you can reach the controls without stretching, and use a correctly fitted helmet and suitable footwear.

The instructor should check whether the vehicle is appropriate for your height, reach and current ability. Do not struggle with a machine that you cannot control comfortably; discuss alternatives before beginning a moving exercise.

Practise starting and stopping first

Early exercises can focus on moving a short distance in a suitable practice area and stopping at an agreed point. Look ahead along the intended path, keep inputs gentle and follow the instructor's explanation of the controls. Repeat the exercise until starting, keeping a steady line and stopping feel coordinated.

A sudden twist of the throttle or abrupt braking can upset balance. If an exercise becomes rushed, stop safely with the instructor and return to a simpler task. Consistent control matters more than covering a long distance.

Add turns and observation gradually

Once basic control is reliable, the instructor can introduce wider turns, speed adjustment and looking in the direction of travel. Mirror checks, indicators and awareness of nearby people should become part of the exercise, not an afterthought added when entering traffic.

Agree the next step after each lesson

Ask which skill improved, what needs repeating and whether the next class will remain in a practice area or move to suitable supervised road conditions. Rain, congestion and individual progress can change that decision. There is no need to compare your pace with another learner's.
